Address given as Peter Street after 1840, but the original address was
Ark Lane which suggests how the pub got its name. Also heard it mentioned in
1804 as Lower Street.

VALUABLE BREWERY,
Free Public Houses and other estates,
To be Sold By Auction, By Messrs. White, (Without Reserve).
Pursuant to certain orders of the Vice Chancellor of Great Britain, and
before the Major part of the Commissioners named and authorised in and
by a Commission of bankrupt awarded and issued against Matthew William
Sankey, of the City of Canterbury, brewer, dealer and chapman, at the
Guildhall, of the said city of Canterbury, on Wednesday next, the 22nd
day of September next, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon, (subject to
such conditions of sale as shall be then and there produced.)
The following very Valuable Freehold Estates, in Lots.
Valuable Brewery free public houses and other Estates to be sold by
auction by Mrs white without reserve. Lot 26. A Messuage, called the "Noah’s Ark," with the stables, yards,
gardens, land and appurtenances, situate in Deal aforesaid, and now in
the occupation of John Cory. |

Location is in Ark Lane on seaward side of railway and in North Ward.

In 1821 Richard Cory is recorded as a victualler licensee of the
Noah Ark Inn. The house had a rateable value of £6 the stables and sheds
£1. 10s and the land £4.15s. In the 18th century the heyday of the Deal Smugglers, contraband goods
were landed by luggers and then taken inland by horsemen. The Noah's Ark
Inn was used to stable their horses. It was situated amid fields and
gardens at the rear of the town." Richard's son John born in the
pub in 1821 was later licensee of the "Deal
