Herne

Above photo, circa 1900.

This is said to be the "Lower Red Lion" at Herne, but the building just doesn't look right to me.

Martin Archer suggests that this photo, or at least the building on the right, is very similar to the building that is next to the "Butchers Arms" today. If that is the case, that would make the pub on the left the "Prince Albert" later to become the "Smugglers Arms" and the building in the centre, the "Butcher's Arms." However, bother the "Butcher's Arms" and the "Prince Albert" appear to be different buildings.

Rory Kehoe also says:- No way! For one thing, the building on the corner (Smugglers' Cottage) is c.1700 and is nothing like the one in the late Victorian photo. You also have this image listed under the "Prince Albert." Hmm... Maybe? The "Prince Albert" building is configured totally differently but I don't know when it was built. My guess would be 1880+/- a few years, so within recent memory of the late Prince but likely before the photo was taken.

To be confirmed. I'm slightly more taken with the idea that the single storey shop is the site of what is now the "Butcher's Arms." Again, I don't know when the "Butcher's Arms" building was built but it was on the market recently, so I may be able to find out.
