Above postcard circa 1959, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. Although the Smuggler's was owned by the Black Eagle Brewery, Westerham, it was (as the signage states) supplied with Cobb's Classic Ales, from their Margate Brewery. When this photograph was taken, the building to the right of the bicycle hosted a butcher's shop. It now trades as the "Butcher's Arms."

Evidentially there is a tunnel in the cellar that leads to the church opposite, and this was reputed to have been used by the smugglers when the customs came visiting.

I am informed that if you look up at the pub by the chimney, you will see a small triangular window. This used to be a smugglers lookout post ion the old days.
