From the Kentish Gazette, 1 September 1857.
ASHFORD. Magistrates’ Clerk's Office.
Yesterday Week. (Before H. W. Carter, Esq., and the Rev. N. Toke.)
Joanna McNeilus was summoned by Mrs. Kesby, wife of John Kesby,
landlord of the "Smith’s Arms," New-street, for using threatening
language towards her, by which she went in bodily fear of her.
The plaintiff said the defendant was in the habit of coming to her
husband's house and creating a disturbance, and had on several
occasions threatened her, and said that morning she would murder
complainant before the week was out.
Emma Kesby, sister-in-law of complainant, corroborated this.
The defendant said she had never threatened Mrs. Kesby, but her
husband was encouraged to live away from her by complainant.
The defendant’s husband said he was quite willing to be bound for
her good behaviour.
Defendant was ordered to find bail in £10 to keep the peace for
twelve months, and to pay the expenses. Her husband became bail, and
she was discharged.

Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald, Saturday 6 March 1920.
Ashford Invalid Objections to Licences.
At the adjourned licensing sessions, Ashford on Tuesday, objection was
raised on the grounds of redundancy to the licences of the "Eight Bells" and
"Smiths Arms," Ashford and the "Black Dog," Great Chart.
Mr. B. B. C. Drake contended that the objection was invalid on the ground
that no written notice has been served on the licence holders as the Act
required.
This was upheld by the Bench, and all three licences were renewed.
