Not a lot of information on this one yet, but there was another "Five
Bells" situated in Five Bells Lane that later became known as Queen
Street. However, this one in Middle Street has been traced back as far as
1828.
The pub was auctioned at the "Rose" in 1860
but obviously survived.

From Title Deeds.
Leasehold May, 1860 and described

FIRE.
On Friday morning about eight o'clock, a fire broke out at the “Five
Bells Inn,” Middle-street Deal in the occupation of Mr. R Verrier. It
appears that while Mr. Verrier was seated at the breakfast table a
person named Noble rushed into the room with the startling intelligence
that a dense cloud of smoke was issuing from a room used by him as a
sleeping apartment on the second floor. Fortunately, in a short time, by
the assistance of neighbours who strenuously exerted themselves, and the
active cooperation of the police, the progress of flames checked and
eventually subdued. How the fire originated is involved in mystery,
particularly as Mr. Verrier had not left the room long previous to the
fire breaking out. But for the opportune discovery of Noble, the
premises would in all probability have been destroyed. Mr. Verrier is
uninsured.

By 1872 the pub was owned and supplied by Hills & Co Brewery, perhaps
it was them who bought the pub at the above mentioned auction.

 The
above photo was kindly supplied by Trevor Hatton and shows an outing
from the "Five Bells" that took place on 6th September 1924. It is
unknown where they were when the photo was taken. |
When the pub finally closed in 1959, it was under the rule of Charrington's,
and the
license was transferred to the newly built pub, the "Archer"
in Whitfield.
