The "Star & Garter," located at 60 Old Woolwich Road, is a freehold
public house extending over 4,961 sq ft, arranged over the ground,
basement, and first floor The 19th-century backstreet local, with
its rich history has been listed as an Asset of Community Value,
highlighting its importance to the neighbourhood.
Situated on the corner of Greenwich Park Street and Old Woolwich
Road, the property is conveniently accessible to Maze Hill Railway
Station and Cutty Sark DLR.
According to the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the property falls
under Sui Generis use, is not a listed building, but is situated
within the Greenwich Park Conservation Area.
The "Star & Garter" has been put on the market with vacant
possession.
The building is described as a two-storey corner edifice, above a
basement, with part rendered and part exposed brick elevations
beneath a pitched tile roof.
The ground floor comprises an open-plan trading area with a central
bar server and two interconnecting trading areas with seating for 58
customers.
The first floor, accessible internally comprises five bedrooms, a
living room, kitchen, office, and bathroom.
The basement is accessed from the rear of the ground floor and
provides a cellar with two further ancillary storage rooms.
The premises are permitted to sell alcohol daily from 11am to 11pm.
The property is administered by the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The "Star & Garter" has witnessed significant developments over the
years. Research suggests there was a pub on this site from at least
the early 19th century possibly an earlier house known as the "White
Bear" as far back as the 1690s.
The present structure, a mid-19th-century corner pub building, was
noted for its no-frills, old-school Greenwich local charm, with
regulars, live folk music sessions, and Young’s beer.
A serious incident in August 2021, where a man was stabbed on the
premises, led to the revocation of the pub’s licence.
The pub closed in 2021, with its future in doubt.
In 2022, local residents formed the ‘Save the Star’ campaign, aiming
to buy the building and run it as a community asset.
The "Star & Garter" had been designated an Asset of Community Value,
giving the community a legal right to bid if the owner wished to
sell.
Campaigners, supported by the Plunkett Foundation, raised funds via
community investment and crowdfunding to secure a lease and reopen
the site as a community-run pub.
The pub reopened at the end of April 2023 under the new name “The
Star of Greenwich”, offering community activities as well as drinks.
However, by 2025, reports indicated that Greenwich Hospital, which
still owns the freehold, intended to sell the building, raising new
questions over the long-term security of the community venture.
As of the latest updates, some listings describe the "Star of
Greenwich" as “closed long-term”, suggesting the operation has at
least paused.
The property is now being sold by Savills, with offers in excess of
£850,000 for the freehold interest with vacant possession.
The fixtures and fittings are excluded from the sale. |
