Established  in the mid-1850s but changed name in 1874 to the "Duchess of Edinburgh" when the Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia - the daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia and the aunt of Russia's last Tsar, Nicholas II - married Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She was the first and only Romanov to marry into the British royal family and upon her marriage became the 2nd Duchess of Edinburgh, the licensee thought that a change of name would make him more likely to gain a spirit license, at the time there was a regular horse-bus route along Upper Wickham Lane.
