Sandy Hill
Woolwich
Above photo, circa 1880, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. An interesting
photograph of the pub when it sported a colonial-style balcony, which
would have offered shade to customers and pedestrians alike. The
licensees, William & Mary Wonnacott, clearly had an eye for selling
exotic, out of town beers, as the wall sign advertises that they were
offering Flower & Sons' Pale Ale, which was brewed in faraway
Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire. Presumably Watney's Stag Brewery,
Pimlico, which owned the pub, had some kind of distribution agreement
with Flower's. |
Above photo, circa 1890, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. By the time this
photograph was taken, William Wonnacott had left the pub (1883) and new
licensee, Charles Carpenter, had taken over. How long he remained at the
pub isn't known but by the time of the 1891 Census, the new licensees
were Henry and Diana Syer. The balcony had clearly been removed some
time in the 1880s and Flower's beers appear to be off the menu. |
Only found to date in a list of licensees from a local paper of 1866.
In 1869-70 the pub was part of a consortium who were advertising their
goods of selling tea in response to grocers' selling beer and wine. (Click

From the Woolwich Gazette, 16 February 1894.
Blackheath Petty sessions. Transfer of licences.
Several applications were adjourned for a month, the reason in
nearly every case being non compliance with the rule which requires
previous evidence of a yearly tenancy to be given to the clerk. In one
instance, Mr. Pook, solicitor pleaded that the delay had been
unavoidable and asked to have the transfer granted subject to the
production of the agreement within 24-hours, but the Bench decided to
uphold their rule.
The Adjourned cases were those of the "Princess
Royal," St. Paul, Deptford; the "Crown," Lee; the "Fort," Woolwich; and
the "Duke of Cambridge," Lewisham. The other transfers were granted.
