Said to have been established as a licensed premises by 1842 but probably earlier. The building was rebuilt in 1923 as part of a "pub improvement" initiative by Truman's Brewery.

The entire building and its surrounding streets such as Porson Street was demolished in the late 20th century to make was for local residential development of the Sundermead Estate.

I am informed that today by Chris Fairs (2019) that both Holmesdale and Hanover Street no longer exist but looking at A to Z Old to New Streets of London, they are now Loampit Vale and Elvira Street, respectively. Looking on Google Maps, the area would appear to have changed dramatically, with the site of the "Royal Oak" now being opposite a Sainsbury's Local.

TRANSFER OF LICENCES. Sept 25.

Present - Sir T. M. Wilson, Bart., chairman; General Angerstein, Captain Hossett, Alderman Eagleton, T. Lewin, Esq., J. Sutton, Esq., and Coles Chile, Esq.

This being the annual licensing day for the hundreds of Blackheath, and Little and Lessness, there was an unusually large attendance of applicants for spirit licences, numbering 60; of which Greenwich numbered 9; Saint Nicholas, Deptford, 1; Saint Paul, Deptford, 6; Lewisham, 4; Lee, 1; Charlton, 1; Woolwich, 20; and Plumstead, 14.

Mr. Bristow supported the applications of R. Bolton, "Cottage of Content," and William Hardy, "Royal Oak," both of which were opposed by Mr. Carttar. Licences refused.
