490 New Cross Road
St. Paul
Deptford
Above photo, circa 1888, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. The gentleman in the
dark suit, standing by the door of the pub may be long-serving licensee,
John Bellchambers, although he may have retired by the late-1880s.
Comparing this photograph with the 2008 version, it's evident that the
building had quite a significant rebuild at some point and was
heightened by the addition of a mansard roof. When this photograph was
taken, the pub was one of around 500 licensed houses, within the tied
estate of Watney's Stag Brewery, Pimlico, London SW1. |
