Star and Garter 1888

Above photo, circa 1888, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. The gentleman in the dark suit, standing by the door of the pub may be long-serving licensee, John Bellchambers, although he may have retired by the late-1880s. Comparing this photograph with the 2008 version, it's evident that the building had quite a significant rebuild at some point and was heightened by the addition of a mansard roof. When this photograph was taken, the pub was one of around 500 licensed houses, within the tied estate of Watney's Stag Brewery, Pimlico, London SW1.
