From the Kent and Sussex Courier, 15 July 1874.

Caple. Drunk and Quarrelsome.

John Stevens, a labourer, attending a threshing machine, of Capel, was summoned for being drunk, violent, and refusing to quit the "Queen's Head," Capel, on the 1st inst; also for damaging a door to the amount of 2s., the property of Thomas Tully, the landlord; and also with being drunk on the highway on the 1st inst.

Defendant did not appear, and service of summons was proved by P.C. Whibley, who said that when he served the summons defendant remarked, "I suppose I shall not be hanged."

Thomas Tully, landlord of the "Queen's Head Inn," Five Oak Green, Caple, said that on the day in question the defendant called at his house and commenced quarrelling with everyone present, and pulled the door down. He refused to leave.

William Waterman gave corroborative testimony.

P.C. Whibley said he saw the defendant in a drunken state on the road.

The Bench fined the defendant 5s and 13s 6d. costs in the first case, 5s and 9s. costs in each case for being drunk, and also 2s. for damaging the door.

Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser, 03 September 1870.

Annual licensing.

Mr Johan applied on behalf of Mr William Clinch for spirit licence to the "Rose and Crown" beer shop, situate at Five Oak Green, Capel. The premises have been held as a beer shop for a very great number of years. Mr Rogers applied for another application on the same line of Road, the "Queen's Head," Caple, and Mr. Gorham also applied for a spirit licence to the "Red Cow," Capel, on the road from Tudely to Hadlow. The Bench refused to grant either of the applications.
