Canterbury

Canterbury map 1874

Above map 1874 identified by Rory Kehoe.

According to Michael David Mirams in his 1987 book "Kent Inns and Inn Signs" he says:- "At one time, there were as many as six "Victoria Inns" in Canterbury alone, now demolished or re-titled." At present I have only found two of them.

The "Castle" is also listed as being number 30 and 31 Castle Street after 1898. By 1917 it was definitely just one pub going under the name of the "Castle." I believe when it changed name it was probably expanded into number 31 and given the prefix "Hotel".

I believe the buildings was bombed during the war and demolished shortly afterwards. The vicinity now appears to be no more than a car parking area.

From the South Eastern Gazette, 10 November, 1879.

The "Victoria," Wincheap, was transferred from William Donald Hughes to William Miller.

I am assuming this is the Castle Street premises. However, this could well be one I haven't got a dedicated page for yet.

From the Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald. 14 July 1894. Price 1d.

CANTERBURY POLICE COURT. TRANSFER OF LICENSES.

The following were granted new licenses:- “Victoria.” Wincheap Street, to Charles Thorne.

I am assuming this is the Castle Street premises. However, this could well be one I haven't got a dedicated page for yet.
