Tally Ho, Deal

Above house numbered 118 is the "Tally Ho" circa 1794.

Above photo by Paul Skelton, 26 July 2008.

Earliest mention of this house is 1830 when it was a beer house. The sign on the plaque states "Tally Ho" 1794. However, the house is probably a lot older than this as in 2007, while undertaking repairs to the roof, local artisan Charles Finn discovered the name Valentine West 1747 cut into the lead sheeting and also the outline of a footprint and initials RW written and dated 1779. The West family are seen to be residents at 144 Middle Street till at least 1812.

Further information have dated the building to circa 1712.

The Deale Licensing Register of 10 January 1884 states that Michael Kelly applied to change the name of his house from the "Tally Ho" to the "Frederick William." This was granted. However, it didn't stay with that name for long for the same body reported on 3 March 1884, the very same year just three months later, that the licence was transferred to A Simmons who was permitted to change the name back.
