Great Street

Dover

Great Street was named this until about 1856 and was a short thoroughfare between Bulwark Street and Beach Street, at one time was wide enough to gain the title Great Square. The only other pub listed in Great Street was the "Hope Inn," which also had the address Council House Street, so I assume the name of the street changed after 1856 and perhaps the name of the pub also. The other "Star and Garter" is found in Trevanion Street which was in the St. James's area.

From the Kentish Post, August 12-16, 1758. Kindly sent from Alec Hasenson.

Sale of a Privateer at the Sign of the "Star and Garter, in Great Street in Dover.
