The St. James's area of Dover has been more or less derelict ever since the end of WW2 and many a time folk have spoken about its redevelopment.

Here is just the latest promise to build on the area and I hear a promise of another hotel being built. Although I won't be holding my breath, I've heard it all before, and I've lived in Dover since 1961.

MASTERPLAN FOR SHOPS, HOTEL AND RESTAURANT

DEVELOPERS Bond City submitted plans on Monday for the multimillion-pound redevelopment of the St James' area of Dover.

Their submission follows the recent signing of legal agreements and Bond City's public consultation.

The proposals for the Dover Town Investment Zone (DTIZ) scheme include a shopping area Covering 120,000 sq ft., a new hotel and restaurants at the Woolcomber Street junction with Town Wall Street.

They replace previous plans for a project centred on Asda, prior to the retail giant's withdrawal.

The new plans include a range of mostly smaller shops, restaurants and a 100 bed hotel, centred on a central square of landscaped parking for 445 vehicles.

Dover Distict Council leader Cllr Paul Watkins said: "Following the recent signing of the Development Agreements, we welcome the early submission of these planning applications. They will of course be considered through the council's normal planning procedure. This is another very significant step forward for this major redevelopment."

Bond City are working closely with the council as development partners.
