Seagull

Valid XTHML

69 Middle Street.

Deal

Originally called the "Ship" but changed name to the "Seagull" on 7 May 1857 when it was transferred to Edmund Hadlow. Evidentially, Samuel Baker the previous landlord, murdered an Ensign named McCarroll there and so not wanting to be associated with murder the name was changed.

However, it lost its license in September of the same year and then changed name back to the "Ship" again at the licensing sessions 14 September 1865, records showing it now at 70 Middle Street. Kellys directory of 1878 state it at 69 again.

From the Deal Licensing Register, 7 May, 1857.

Previously the "Ship," on transfer from Samuel Baker to Edmund Hadlow. Licence not renewed at Annual Sessions, September 1857.
