Later to become the "Admiral Penn".
The Deal History Society give the earliest date of this pub to be 1860. However, licensees Anthony Smith ("Admiral Penn") say the premises was licensed as far back as 1818, although do not poses the documentation to sustain this statement. The building is actually older, being listed in 1808, but only described as a dwelling house and shop. The occupant being Jonathan Read, Tailor and Draper. 1847 shows the first definite connection with beer when Valentine Hoile, Sandwich brewer leased the building.
