The "Freemason's Tavern" was built in 1810 and rebuilt in 1908, butchers were regular customers at lunchtime, as several were employed at an abattoir behind the pub. The new house was designed as a quarter-circle, which allowed room for an alleyway up the side of the building to give access from the High Street to Church Road. This led right past the abattoir, and consequently the passage is still known as Pig Alley. The old leaded-light windows of the tavern still advertise George Beer's Canterbury Ales & Stouts.

In 1869-70 the pub was part of a consortium who were advertising their goods of selling tea in response to grocers' selling beer and wine. (Click for further details.)

Changed name to the "Emerald Bar" then Jeykll and Hyde" and now (2014) I believe "Macies."

RAMSGATE.

On Thursday night or early Friday morning, some evil disposed person or persons did wilfully tar the sign board of the "Freemason's Tavern," in the High Street, which ran down the front of the house and which will put the landlord to some considerable expense to clean off. The landlord, Mr. Maxted, has offered a reward of two guineas, which it is hoped will bring the offender to justice.

South Eastern Gazette 24 March 1863.

DEATH.

On the 19th inst., at the "Freemason's Tavern," High-street, Ramsgate, Mr. Henry Maxted, aged 65.
