Found in a list of 1692 when it was referred to merely as the "Dog." The following year it was on the Billeting list for 4 men. By 1803 the name was referred to as the "Black Dog."

Three Sixth Parts, and the Half of One other Sixth Part, of the "Dog" alehouse, and other adjoining Tenements; situate in Castle Street, in the City of Canterbury.
