Lorraine Sencicle has kindly sent me a passage she recently found from William Shellinks book (Journal of his travels in England 1661-1663," translated by Maurice Exwood. H. L. Lehmann Camden Society 1993.

Page 39 - 22 July - 23 July 1661:-

We arrived at Dover, 9 miles from London, at half past eight in the evening and went to the "Hotel à L'Escu de France," to a Mr. Neufveu an excellent inn, with a large room at the back with a view over the harbour and the sea, where we were well accommodated.

On the 23rd we went to look at Dover, and in the afternoon we went to see the castle, which lies high on the chalk cliffs, which fall off horribly steeply into the sea. The castle is an ancient building, surrounded by three extremely thick and strong ring walls with very deep ditches carved out of the rock.

Of course Dover is 72 miles from London, but if the rest is correct, this is the latest inn found in Dover that hasn't been listed before.
