PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1843-

Horse and Groom

Latest 1871+

Selsted

Bagshaw Directory 1847 mentions the above public house, near Selsted but situated at "Minnis." I am not quite sure exactly where this is at present, but there are no obvious public houses in the area with that same name. In the area there is Stelling Minnis, Rhodes Minnis, Swingfield Minnis, and Ewell Minnis. A Minnis being Common Land cleared of trees for the purpose of grazing.

The licensee being another of the Tritton family, possibly connected to the brewer of Staple.

I also have reference to a William Tritton being the licensee of the "Black Horse" at Densole. It is possible that the two houses are indeed one and the same.

From the Kentish Gazette, 26 September, 1843.
