Holiday Inn 1972

Above photo, circa 1972, kindly sent by Rory Kehoe. More of a hotel than a pub, the bar was (incredibly enough!) quite popular in the mid-70s and frequented by chaps wanting to impress their girlfriends. In those days, Dover town centre wasn't exactly full of sophisticated venues, though I'm not sure, even in the 1970s, if only selling Watney's counted as sophisticated!

The brutalist tower block adjacent to the pub was supposed to be an "International Hotel" but ended up being Burlington House, which over 30 years, served a variety of commercial uses but mercifully succumbed to the wrecker's ball on 11th February 2016. Nobody wept! The site is now occupied by the St. James' shopping centre.

Building of the hotel commenced in April 1972 and the opening followed on 10 December 1973. It can best be described by saying that it contained all the modern conveniences of the day plus other refinements such as swimming pool. It changed hands in January 1985 when Queens Moat Houses, who also owned the "Dover Stage", bought the hotel, naming it "Dover Moat House".
