The landlord has just found some deeds that say the pub was built in 1801. Originally called the "Volunteer" I am unsure as to when it changed name and for what reason, although it was certainly after 1950. It has been suggested that with another "Volunteer" just along the road at Ash, the pubs were being confused with each other, hence the name change.

It had been mentioned that Malcolm Butcher's wife was tragically killed in a road accident on the main road outside the pub in 1978.
