Red Lion 2012

The Closed Pubs website shows the above photo by Darkstar, date circa 2012 to be 145 High Street, and this certainly does look like it used to be a pub. Is it indeed in Chatham because I make 145 definitely H Samuels.

The above plaques that are on the building appear to show a Red Lion, photo taken by Darkstar.

I have reference to a "Red Lion" in Chatham, addressed at 145 (110Pigot's Directory 1832-34) High Street/Military Road, the address is now that of H. Samuel.

However, the Closed Pubs website http://www.closedpubs.co.uk/redlion.html shows another building, photo above, that it says is this "Red Lion."

I do know of another "Red Lion" in Rochester, but that is addressed as 181-183 (100) High Street (EastgatePigot's Directory 1832-34) / Corporation Street, but the photo I have for that is certainly not any of the above.

Local information needed to sort this one out I think.

Michael Mirams points out that this building is actually the "Britannia" addressed as 41 High Street, Chatham. But as to the Lion, that is still unknown.

Alec James tells me that she has an old pub list for Chatham, no date or street numbers but the "Britannia" is listed between the "Union Flag" (at 47 High Street) and the "Chest Arms" (at 55 High Street.) I worked in the building in the late 60’s and it was Chas H Sheen, wine merchants. The address was 37-41 High Street. No sign it was ever a pub (think I would have noticed!). cheers Alec James
