Unknown pub, Ramsgate

Steve Richards, emailed me the above photograph, saying:-

Dear Sirs,

Could anyone identify the location of this old photograph (attached) of what is probably a Working Men's Club outing from Kettering, Northants. My grandfather is sitting fourth from the right, front row. The only clue I can find is the sign advertising Leney's Bottled Beers which makes me think it could be a South Coast resort.
Yours sincerely,

Steve Richards.

Desborough,

Northamptonshire.

Please email me any information anyone may have and I'll post it on this page and forward any messages to Steve. I do not believe this is of a Dover or Deal pub, but could be wrong. It's certainly on a hill and there is a Book-sellers next door.

Just received:- (17 April 2009)

After sending you the photo I found out that it was a day trip to Ramsgate, I know that they also had a multitude of pubs in the 1920/30's as you did in Dover. The photograph was taken by Ramsgate Reflex Snaps, 3 Granville Marina, Ramsgate, sorry, I hadn't noticed this on the back before I emailed you. If anyone connected to the history of Ramsgate would be interested in the photo I have got rid of that awful arrow pointing to my grandfather, must have been done by one of my elderly relations. Please feel free to put the photo on the website (please find attached the mended copy).
Thanks for your prompt reply
Best regards
Steve Richards

Having trouble finding an old image, but my first thought on seeing the image was Albion Hill in Ramsgate. At the bottom is now the Port and Anchor (formerly the Royal Standard)

It is only the steepness of the hill that leads me to think this (my nan lived at the top so I have been up and down 100s of times!) - maybe a lead to follow....

After looking at both photographs I think that Mr Wells may well have solved the mystery. I think the book shop may be the frontage with draped net curtains, the part of the building that curves round to the bar would have been out of shot on the left of the original photograph. If it is the pub in question it's good to see that it's still there.
