Earliest definite mention found so far is a tradesman token found. T.F. at the Dolphin, Deale. 1658. T.F. standing for Thomas Fitch. However, Glover and Rogers of "The Old Pubs of Deal and Walmer" fame, have traced it back to 1816.

Deal Borough Records show the following entry:- MS Council's Opinion 18th November 1776 - by Geo. Rowe, Inner Temple.

In the town and Borough of Deal are 30 Publick Houses including taverns and Inns, 18 whereof have stabling fit for the accommodation of Dragoons and horses and the other 12 have no stabling at all.

These dragoons (12 or 13 in all) were to assist the Officers of the Revenue at Deal.

The  following houses refused to billet the Dragoons for lack of suitable accommodation.

The Dolphin was mentioned in this list.

1661 saw the premises next door leased from the Archbishop of Canterbury and by 1679 a "Black Horse" was mentioned. It is possible that these two pubs operated together at the same time, but eventually it is thought they became one and by 1735 the "Dolphin" appears to have vanished.

There is another "Dolphin" mentioned in the neighbouring village of Walmer.
