Known as the "Clarendon Stores" this served as an off-licenses well into the 1960s. I can remember visiting this shop on many a hot sunny summer for their home-made ice lollies that cost about 3d each, far cheaper than that others in the other shops, but you never knew what flavour you would get till you asked what the flavour of the day was.

However the licensee list shown below suggests that it was operational between 1897 and at least late 1960s.

From the Dover Express and East Kent News, Friday, 27 August, 1897.

DOVER BREWSTER SESSIONS

WANTED A WINE LICENSE

On the name of Mr. Wiles, who holds and off-license at 95, Clarendon Place, being called, Mr. Hatton Brown came forward and said that the holder had asked if he might have a wine license.

That simple method of approaching this Court on a grave matter which is fenced round with many preliminary regulations, excited the risibility of the Court, and the Clerk closed the incident by remarking that “he may ask, but if he wants the license he must make another application in the usual way.”
