PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Barry Smith and Paul Skelton

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

My thanks go to the many friends I made during my searches over the years. I am particularly grateful to Dover resident Joe Harman, who unearthed much additional information, not only adding to the list, but also managing to predate many of those already there. The co-operation of George Pepper and his staff of the Dover Express was vital before the list could be entertained in the first place and they gave their assistance without hesitation.

John Woodland made my task easier by allowing me to use books and maps which were in his possession at that time, and a book written by H.W. Rolfe provided a wealth of information regarding the local coinage tokens. For the history of the town itself I relied largely on Lyons History and the books written by John Bavington Jones. The politeness and consideration I received, from the staff of Dover Public Library and Dover Museum and the County Archives at Maidstone encouraged me and was appreciated. I was impressed finally, by the many people, some of whom I never met in person, who supplied lists and information. If certain houses they mentioned have not been included, it is not that I doubt their sincerity, it is simply that my searches were not able to confirm them. I make no apology for quoting all prices in pounds and shillings and measurements in yards. They are things that I understand.

Following the above thanks, I (Paul Skelton) have now taken on the task to try and keep updated the wonderful information that Barry has kindly let me use, so a huge thanks to him. I did promise him a computer that I no longer use, and he is now in command of that.

As well as the above, I must also thank the numerous folk involved in the other web sites I have links to for the information I have used from their research.

Also, great thanks to Alec Hasenson for the information he has kindly sent me whilst doing his own research for a project regarding the shipping and ships that have used Dover as a port, and to Joyce Banks for sending me some of the information she too is researching on Dover. Others I should also thank include Kevin Costello, Edward Cogdell, Maggie Stephenson-Knight, Ken Chapman and I am sure lots of others who I have simply missed out at present. Let me know who you are and I'll add you to the list.

Lastly, for the pubs that are Open 2014+ and who have given permission to copy their photos on the walls and also for the information they have amassed themselves. Without them, all my own research would be in the library and on computer, and I must say, it is really nice being able to take in, first hand, the welcome and hospitality of those who now run the establishments that this web is all about.

Michael Mirams for sending me loads of his pictures, Rory Kehoe for his postcard collection and research around Canterbury, various Facebook groups including Maidstone archives, Mick Coomer and his wife Norma for searching out loads of newspaper articles  and licensee names from the Census's down the times, plus so many other people far too numerous to mention for just keeping me updated on the local pubs from where they live.

Paul Skelton. (November 2018).
