Illegal Beer Shop.
On Wednesday, Walter Miller, the keeper of a beer shop situate under one of
the Greenwich Railway arches, appeared before the magistrate in answer to a
summons issued at the instigation of Inspector Pearson, charging him with having
his house open after the hour of 11 o'clock at night.
P.C. Frost 24R, said that at a quarter past 12 on the night of the 8th of
February, he visited the defendants house. The front door was closed, and on
being admitted he found five men standing in front of the bar, on which were two
measures containing malt liquor. In and upstairs room he found 10 females and 12
men; and the defendant accounted for their being there, by saying that they were
professionals who had been engaged at a party held earlier in the evening. In
answer to the charge, the defendant said that the person at his bar, were
friends of his own, and not pots companions.
He had unfortunately been away from home that evening, and was not aware
until he returned, that any body had been allowed to remain after the house was
closed; fined 10s.
