At present I don't know whether this had a drinks license but being a private hotel you would have had to be a resident or guest to gain access.

The earliest I have found this operating to date is the late 1950s when it was being run by a Misses Raffity. The grand-son of Trevor Marshall purchased the building and ran it for the entire of the 1960s, and he later went into partnership with his parents.

The property was described as having a "Fawlty Towers" atmosphere, complete with various long term guests.

The original structure was the left half of an older building, which was later extended into the other half with an additional extension.

The entire row of hotels on the north side of Clifton Gardens, including the Avondale, was bought by a developer for redevelopment and demolished in 1971/72, but the developer subsequently went bankrupt, leaving the site as a car park for many years.

Today, the location is occupied by Homepine House, a block of private flats.
