Latest 1792+

Boxley

At present the only reference to this pub has been found. However, I have found reference to an "Artichoke" in Maidstone which could be one and the same.

From the Maidstone Journal, 16 October 1792.

Sunday se'nnight, William Wedd, Paper-maker, of the "Artichoke" in the parish of Boxley, near this town, who for a long time before had been deranged in his intellects, suddenly, and in presence of his wife, seized hold of a razor and cut his throat in a terrible manner; several of the faculty of his town attended and sewed up the wound, with hopes to have affected a cure, but the cut was too deep, and he lingered under the most excruciating pain, till Friday morning last, and then expired; having left a family of two small children, and a wife far advanced in pregnancy of a third.
