South Eastern Gazette, 11 December, 1860.
Robbery with Violence, at Hunton.
John Agace, hawker, 20, for having assaulted John Hodsoll, and
stolen a watch and chain from him, at Hunton, on the 7th October.
Mr. Biron prosecuted.
The prosecutor, a pupil teacher at West Farleigh, said that, having
acted as booker to Mr. Bannerman during the hop season, he attended
a supper given to that gentleman’s pickers on the above night, at
the "Horse Shoes" public-house, and left about midnight. Prisoner
was also there and left at the same time. Witness, with several
others, started to go to Coxheath. They walked on until they came to
some persons who were making a disturbance, and while standing there
the accused took hold of witness and threw him on his back. On
getting up he missed his watch.
Wm. Spice deposed that he saw prosecutor get up from ground, and
heard him say he had lost his watch.
Francis Batten, living at Coxheath, saw the prisoner with his arms
round prosecutor, and before witness could get to him prisoner had
thrown Hodsoll down. Witness pulled prisoner off, and then he ran
away to some hop-houses at Hunton. Witness followed and saw him
there under some straw.
Nine months’ hard labour.
