Union Street

Greenwich

I have reference to a "Fox" addressed at 12 Haddo Street, which may or may not be the same as this one addressed at Union Street, the latter I can't find in the Greenwich area today.

This one was referred to as a beer-house in 1857.

Local knowledge required on this one please.

Burglary.

Early on Sunday morning last, a burglary was committed at the "Fox," beer-shop, Union street, Greenwich. Three men named Thomas Tillen, Henry Ward, and Daniel Perry, notorious characters, were charged on suspicion, before the magistrate, on Monday last. No prosecutor appearing the prisoners were discharged.

The Sunday Beer Nuisance.

On Saturday, William Andrews, landlord of a beer shop in Union Street, Greenwich, was charged on a summons with selling beer during prohibited hours on Sunday, the 12th of June.

The defendants house, which is also connected by a general shop, was visited by Sergeant King, 27R, and Margetson, a plain clothes' constable, when upon gaining admittance in an upstairs room, they found two men sitting down in front of a barrel of beer from which they could help themselves ad libitum.

The landlord then said they were lodgers, but this was denied.

After hearing the defense, the magistrate held the offence to be proved, and fined the defendant in the mitigated penalty of 1s., with cost.

( I am assuming this is the beer shop as it's the only one I know in Union Street, however I also know of a William Andrews who was at the  "King William IV," Deptford between 1851-61+)
