Chart Sutton

Only one instance of this found at present, but I do have reference to another "Chequers" situated in the nearby village of Loose. Although this is about 3 miles from Chart Sutton, Boughton Monchelsea lays between them.

From the Maidstone Journal, 9 September 1794.

Stolen or strayed, out of the stable of Mr. Boarer, at the sign of the "Chequers," at Chart Sutton, near Maidstone, on Sunday night the 24th, or early on Monday morning the 25th of August last, a black Mare, aged, about 15 hands high, with a star in her forehead, and one or two white feet behind, low back'd, with the hair rubbed off on the top of the near eye, a swelling of a bony substance on the off four leg near the pastern joint. If strayed, whoever can give intelligence of the said mare to John Buckhurst, of Stoke, in the Hundred of Hoo; or to Mr. Boarer, of Chart Sutton aforesaid, shall receive all reasonable satisfaction for their trouble. If stolen, whoever can give information of the offender or offenders, shall upon his or they're conviction, receive Five Guinness reward by applying to John Buckhurst, of Stoke aforesaid.
