The postcard above states the following:- "The Black Swan, Bridgend, Kent, is a characteristic roadside English Inn, standing by itself at cross roads amidst very picturesque scenery and away from any village."

Bridgend is descried as a hamlet, in the parish of Bexley, union of Dartford, Hundred of Lessness, lathe of Sutton-At-Hone, West Division of Kent, and "A Topographical Dictionary of England, by Samuel Lewis, seventh edition, published 1858" says it had 138 inhabitants.
