PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1779-

Plough

Latest 1903+

Leverton Street

Lenham

I have just come across a change in licensee as mentioned in the Kent and Sussex Courier of 23 October 1903 for this pub addressed in Lenham. However, there are a number of other pubs with the same name in the neighbouring villages and this could well refer to one of those.

The other are as follows:-

"Plough" at Platts Heath (2 miles from lenham), "Plough" at Grafty Green, (3 miles from Lenham) and "Plough" at Stalisfield (6 miles from Lenham).

Further research shows one called the "Plow" mentioned in 1779 and addressed as Leverton Street. I am not certain whether this is the same as the one identified in 1903.

Kentish Gazette, 3 February, 1779.

To be sold, and entered upon immediately.

A freehold licence public house, known by the sign of the "Plow;" consisting of a Stable, and other Out-buildings, with an Acre of Orchard and Garden Ground; situate in Leverton Street, in the Parish of Lenham, 2 miles from the Town, and 10 miles from Maidstone.

For further Particulars enquiry of Mr. Carpenter on the premises.
