Gravesend

Unfortunately without a definitive address for this one I am not sure just how near to Gravesend this pub was, but not yet identifying any with the same name in the surrounding villages I am placing this in Gravesend until further information comes to light.

Ian Goodrick suggests it could be the "George and Dragon" at Swanscombe. They are about 4 miles apart.

Novel Matches.

At the "George and Dragon Inn," near Gravesend, on Thursday, March 28, two matches came off between the well-known one, Ann Archer’s mare Deceitful, rode by the owner, and Mr. Munns filly Lady of the Wood (owner), with one arm in a sling, for £5 each match. The first was a trotting match, in which Archer won, the Lady of the Wood breaking when about half way. The second was a galloping match, which Archer also won, by the Lady becoming unmanageable.
