This was mentioned in a book called the "History of Strood" by Henry Smetham, published 1899, who says this pub was situated on the north side of the High Street and opposite Pelican Yard.

The other day, as a little boy, about two years of age, the son of the master of the "Rose" public house, in Strood, was at play with some more children in the parlour by themselves; a spark, as supposed, set fire to his clothes, and burned him much in a dreadful manner, that he lingered two days, and then died.
