PUB LIST PUBLIC HOUSES Paul Skelton

Earliest 1789-

Duke of Gloucester

Latest 1823+

(Name to)

Church Street

Greenwich

Reference has been in made Pigots directory of 1823-24 to a pub called the "Duke of Gloucester" situated in Greenwich Road in 1823. Cath Cullerne being the licensee. Unfortunately this is the only information regarding this pub I have found to date.

However, Debi Birken suggests that this could have changed name to the "North Pole," and the earliest I have reference to that is 1832, so it is indeed a possibility.

From the Maidstone Journal, 22 September 1789. Greenwich.bmp"

Last week the landlord of the "Duke of Gloucester" public house, at Greenwich, was summoned before J. Russell, Esq., and fined five pounds, for refusing to entertain two soldiers with belonging to the thirty-sixth regiment of foot, billeted upon them. It appeared that the soldiers were much intoxicated with liquor at the time, the Justice lowered the fine to 40 shillings.
