Minster on Sea (Sheppey)

Only one instance of this found to date, as below and I do have reference to a "Victory" at Sheerness, which could well be the same as this..

From the Maidstone Telegraph, Rochester and Chatham Gazette, 3 August 1861.

Wednesday.

Charles Crissfield was charged with having, on 24th June last, committed a burglary and stealing two pairs of boots and other articles, at Minster in Sheppey.

Mr. Marsham appeared for the prosecution and Mr. Rosher for the prisoner.

Susan Trowell, servant at a public house called the "Victory," said that on the morning of the 25th June, when she got up in the morning at about a quarter past six o'clock, she saw the prisoner sitting in the bar parlour. He was tipsy and had a pair of boots, one in one pocket and another in the other, which she took from him. The house of being fastened the night before, but how he got in she could not tell.

Richard Perrin, parish constable, proved taking the prisoner into custody and finding upon him a desk, a thimble and other articles, the property of the prosecutor.

Mr. Rosher made a very ingenious defence, but the jury found the prisoner guilty and he was sentenced to 2 months' imprisonment.
