Originally called the "Dulwich Wood House" the pub dropped the Dulwich date unknown to be known simply as the "Wood House."

This pub may well be situated in Camberwell, which is just outside the Kent border, but I have seen it addressed as in Sydenham which was just inside Kent.

Constructed between 1852-1858 as a grand private house and home of Sir Joseph Paxton, the esteemed architect behind the nearby Crystal Palace.

Identified as a beer house as early as 1853 serving workers for the Chrystal Palace, recorded as a public house in 1861 and granted a formal license in March 1867.

It gained its name from the remains of the Dulwich Wood which was once part of the Great North Wood.
