I don't believe that the cottages in Hougham called the "Black Swan Cottages" were ever a public house. However, I am adding them to this list of pubs just in case some evidence comes my way to prove the otherwise.

The Closed Pubs project and Darkstar seem to suggest that this was a pub, but I think they are assuming that it was just because of the name.

Archie Shepherd sends me the following information:-

Building origins: The building itself dates back further to 1560, when it was rebuilt by Martin Bowes. It is a historic Grade II listed building that originally served as a private residence before its conversion into a hostelry.

1670: Substantial alterations and rebuilding were carried out by Henry Thompson.

1717: The house was owned by Edward Thompson.

1770: The residence was converted into a pub called The Black Swan.

Establishment: Records for the building as a public house date back to the early 1770s.

Closure: It was closed as a licensed premise in 1940, at which point it became a private residence known as Black Swan House during WWII.

Duration: The period from roughly 1770 to 1940 spans approximately 170 years of operation.

The Black Swan pub was opened in 1770 and closed in 1940.
