Bay View Hotel

Above postcard date unknown, with kind permission from Eric Hartland.

The Bay View was built in the 1960s by Henry Johnson after a former building - the Bay View Social Club - burnt down.

Local resident Darren tells me that the original building burnt down in the 1940's or 1950s and the site was redeveloped shortly afterwards and dropped the Hotel from its name. The name derives from when first built in the 1930s when settlement first started to develop the area of the same name.  The building was extended in the 1970s and the place where customers used to drink on the tables outside was sold off for housing. In 2007 a planning application was put in to demolish the entire pub and replace it with housing, but was refused due to it causing a loss of a local amenity. Since then the owners have built up trade by including a full meal service – something which the pub didn’t have in the 80s and 90s at least.
