Previous to 1870 this establishment was an off-license, but the magistrates granted an on-license in September 1870. Unfortunately the exact location or name of the premises remains unknown.

The license holder in 1861 was a Thomas Giles, who was the brother-in-law to William Sedgwick, of Tong Farm, East Sutton.

By 1871 the premises was identified as the "Prince of Wales."

Maidstone Telegraph, Saturday 10 September 1870.

William Sedgwick, of East Sutton, applied for a licence to sell beer to be drunk on the premises he previously having one for the sale of beer not to be drunk on the premises.

The magistrates granted the application.

One time a Mason's tied house, but the brewery was bought out by Shepherd Neame in 1956 and the brewery was subsequently closed and demolished.

I am informed that this also incorporated the "Shant Hotel" and unfortunately burnt down in 2002.
