Bell's Life in London and Sporting Chronicle, Saturday 13 April 1867.

Northfleet. DANIELS v. TIME.

A large number of persons assembled at Northfleet on Monday last to witness the match in which Mr. Daniel's (the landlord of the "Kings Arms" at Southfleet) had backed himself to run 8 miles in one hour, for £20 a side, Mr. Goldsmith of Gravesend backing time.

Mr. Daniel's, who is 46 years of age and about 9 stone weight, started from the milestone at Northfleet, accompanied by his trainer, C. Guilder, at 4:20, and finished at Stroud Hill, having completed the distance in 58 mins. 56 sec, thus winning by 1 min 4 sec.

The betting at starting was 6 to 4 on time, but when half the distance was accomplished it became 2 to 1 on the pedestrian. Mr. Elt of Gravesend was stakeholder, and Mr. Hoper was referee.
