The name Anerly is a Scottish word meaning solitary or only, but from 1860 onwards the area started to become developed with grand Victorian houses. The town hall was built in 1878 and enlarged in 1911. In 1900 the area became part of the Penge urban district of Kent. In 1965 Anerley became part of the London Borough of Bromley.

Originally known as the "Anerley Hotel" it later changed the name hotel for the name Tavern.
