Death.

Jan 31, at Lamberhurst, aged 15, Ann Barrow, daughter of Mr. James Barrow, of the "Swan Inn."

Southeastern Gazette, 6 September 1853.

LAMBERHURST. Passing Base Coin.

On Friday week two tramps, named Charles Sides and Louisa Wilkins, were charged before W. C. Morland, Esq., with uttering base coin on the previous day at Lamberhurst. The male prisoner, it appeared, had gone into the "Swan Inn" about ten o'clock in the morning, and calling for a glass of ale paid Mrs. Osborn for it with the spurious shilling produced, receiving the change in good coin. About an hour afterwards the female had paid a similar visit to Mrs. Standen’s beer-shop, where she obtained change for another shilling. On the quality of these shillings being discovered, constable John Down went in pursuit of the parties, and apprehended them at Goudhurst, when he found upon Sides two base crown pieces, seven half-crowns, and four shillings. Wilkins also was in possession of a bad half-crown. The prisoners were committed to Lewes gaol for trial at the next assizes.

Chip Pan Blaze.

Fire engines from Tunbridge, Metfield and Wadhurst dealt with a fire in the kitchen of the "Swan" public house at Lamberhurst on Thursday afternoon last week. The alarm was raised by the licensee, Mr. Peter Powell, after a chip pan overheated. The kitchen was slightly damaged by smoke.

Starting life as the "Swan" this changed name to the "Swan at the Vineyard" at present, date known, and then later still dropped the "Swan" reference, to simply the "Vineyard."
