LAMBERHURST. Passing Base Coin.
On Friday week two tramps, named Charles Sides and Louisa Wilkins,
were charged before W. C. Morland, Esq., with uttering base coin on
the previous day at Lamberhurst. The male prisoner, it appeared, had
gone into the "Swan Inn" about ten o'clock in the morning, and
calling for a glass of ale paid Mrs. Osborn for it with the spurious
shilling produced, receiving the change in good coin. About an hour
afterwards the female had paid a similar visit to Mrs. Standen’s
beer-shop, where she obtained change for another shilling. On the
quality of these shillings being discovered, constable John Down
went in pursuit of the parties, and apprehended them at Goudhurst,
when he found upon Sides two base crown pieces, seven half-crowns,
and four shillings. Wilkins also was in possession of a bad
half-crown. The prisoners were committed to Lewes gaol for trial at
the next assizes.

smoke. |

then later still dropped the "Swan" reference, to simply the "Vineyard."
