Norfolk Hotel POW 1945

From the Evening Post Volume CXXXIX, issue 125, 29 May, 1945.

Above photo showing New Zealand prisoners of war arriving in England. The location is the "Norfolk Hotel" at the seaside town of Margate, where they are being welcomed by comrades they had not seen for years.

Not a lot known about this establishment at present, or indeed whether it ever held a drinks license. I do know that it was part of the Butlins complex purchased in 1955, along with the "Queen's" formerly the "Highcliffe," the "St George's", the "Norfolk", and the "St. Florence." The following year they purchased the "Grand" and also the "princes" the latter being used for staff accommodation.

However, research tells me that after a fire in the nearby "Endcliffe Hotel" in May 2005, the building was destined to be demolished to make way for retirement homes.
