I believe the pub changed name from the "Railway Hotel" due to the popularity of the T.V. show with same name. As yet, date of change, or indeed what it is doing now, unknown.

Further information tells me that the premises has also been known as the "Fiddler's Cat" and also "Bar One." Hopefully in that order.

The licensee in the mid 1980s was a man called John Mills (a.k.a. John Millward). Throughout his time there or at least for much of it, the pub was officially The Eastender, needless to say, but whether it was his idea to change its name to that, as yet is unknown.

Sadly, not only did Mr. Mills die in the summer of 1986 at the age of just 36 after a short battle with cancer, but his death was the second tragedy to hit his family in less than three years, for in January 1984, his mother Phyllis was killed in the same town in a murder still unsolved to this day.
