Reference to this has been found in the census of 1881 where the premises was described as a beer house and the licensee a Beer Retailer.

Disorderly Behaviour.

A man named Ottaway was charged on remand with disorderly conduct at a public house at Boughton Malherbe, on the 27th October.

Police constable Turner said about 6:30 on the 27th October he was called to the Inn by Mr. Bell the landlord, and saw the defendant drunk. He struck at witness and his fist went through the window. With the assistance of the landlord defendant was ejected.

Police Constable Kemsley corroborated.

For the defence Alfred Chambers was called and said he was at the Inn and it was not Ottaway who caused the disturbance.

Defendant pleaded not guilty and was fined £2 and 11s. costs, and default one months' hard labour.
